Reflection
This past semester has been a fantastic learning experience for me. Prior to posting up this blog for sports marketing, I had never even bothered to try and continually look at news and emerging technology online. I always assumed blogs were boring and didn't really have much to offer someone like me. I couldn't be more wrong! I have been astonished at how many exciting new things are happening right now in the social media world. If it weren't for this course, I would be totally clueless about most of the useful new tools web 2.0 has to offer. I continually check my Google reader account for news on some of my preferred sports topics, its nice to be able to sort the sports news only by the things I want to read about. I've also been able to expand my knowledge by subscribing to some cutting edge websites. If you would like to see some of my Google reader favorites please view "Derek's shared items" on the right side of this page. I've also sent up a "monetize" feature so that my blog can make money based on advertisements! All in all I am looking forward to continue posting on this blog and viewing other blogs in order to keep up with the latest technology and news! There are so many tools and new features that are being introduced soon, it will be exciting to continue to watch social media grow.

Homering in Tenth, Granderson the Hero

Can't help but love a guy like Curtis Granderson. It was a horrible day when I heard that the Tigers were getting rid of him. There are truly not enough good players left in professional athletics like Curtis. Class act off the field, and he gets the job done on the field. Looks like his new team is enjoying every bit of him as he has already blasted his 2nd homer, this one, to win the game. See above link for further details.

Ipad so easy a 2 year old can use it?
Check out the video to the right under "Derek's Shared Items" to my google reader shared documents. Apple is making sure that the Ipad has something for everyone. It was even mentioned that a Dr. Suess for Ipad app wouldn't be too far out. This could really help the marketing of the Ipad. They can truly target whatever market they choose. I'm not sure that I would bother owning one, though. Surely they are neat items, but for the money my laptop seems to work just fine!

I thought this was pretty interesting. This kid was first made famous for his youtube imitation of the legendary Herb Brooks "miracle" speach. This just shows the power of social media. A five year old who manages to memorize a famous speech goes from online star to standing in front of thousands of fans introducing the Boston Red Sox.

Duke basketball — Nicholas Insider
Duke basketball — Nicholas Insider
This is just a followup on one of my prior posts, Duke Basketball, championship or bust? Duke has certainly figured things out in the basketball world. To this day I cannot mention another Duke team that has had any sort of long term success, maybe lacrosse? But their basketball team is a wonder, the above link is an account of one season ticket member. Students are encouraged to cheer on their team through free tickets, and many people camp out just to get season tickets to experience what Duke has to offer. I can only hope and dream that one day, GVSU will be able to build a similiar following though success and quality brand marketing.

Top Social Networking Sites
If you ask the average person what social networking sites are out on the internet most people would probably just list the big three: Facebook,Myspace, and Twitter. These people are missing a great deal of the latest cutting edge social networking websites. I have been doing some searching on some of the newer websites that are just starting out. Below is a list of some various social media websites. Most I have never even heard of, and the list is incredibly long, will the big three be able to maintain their standing in the social media world?

600+ Communities Are Fighting for Google Fiber Internet
I find it entertaining how many communities are holding rallies and flooding their news with high hopes of becoming a google fiber internet town. This article talks about the fact that google has received 190000 responses to have the internet come to certain towns, with 600+ communities represented. This would be an incredible honor and a huge boost to the Michigan economy not only because of the publicity but because of how much more efficient the internet offering will be.
